30 Celebrities Who Lost Children

It is always a tragedy when a parent outlives their child. Unfortunately, several famous people have had children who passed away at a young age. These children of famous people diedbefore their time, tragically cutting their lives short. Some famous people create memorial funds for their children, while others pay tribute to them in song. No matter how each celebrity handles their grief, it can’t be easy. This list of whose children died, is loosely ranked by fame and popularity, and includes information about these famous Hollywood who sadly had to say goodbye to their children.

Who is the most famous person who dealt with the death of their child? Anna Nicole Smith tops our list. Anna Nicole Smith’s son Daniel died on Sept. 10, 2006 of a lethal combination of Zoloft, Lexapro, and methadone. Daniel Smith’s father is Billy Wayne Smith and he was half brother to Dannielynn Birkhead. Tragically, Anna Nicole Smith died less than a year after her son of “combined drug intoxication” associated with sleeping pills. Other famous women who’ve outlived their children include Mary Tyler Moore, Loretta Lynn and Carol Burnett.

Several famous musicians have also experienced the deaths of their children. Eric Clapton’s son Connor died in 1991 when he was just four years old. He tragically fell out of a hotel room window. Clapton wrote the song “Tears in Heaven” in his honor. Other musicians who’ve lost children include Vince Neil, Robert Plant, and Roy Orbison. Actors who have lost kids, daughters, or babies include John Travolta, Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby, Paul Newman, and Mike Tyson.

 

John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston’s son, Jett, died in 2009 at age 16 after complications with a seizure. Jett had two siblings, Ella Blue and Benjamin, who was born after Jett’s death.
Sylvester Stallone’s son, Sage, died of a heart attack on July 13, 2012, at age 36.  Sage Stallone’s mother is Sasha Czack.
Johnny Carson’s son, Richard, died on June 21, 1991, in a car accident. He was taking photographs at the time of the accident.
Boxer Mike Tyson’s four year-old daughter, Exodus, died of accidental asphyxiation on May 25, 2009. She was found by her 7 year-old brother, Miguel, tangled up in a cord attached to a treadmill.
Charlie Chaplin’s first child, Norman Spencer Chaplin, died in 1919 three days after he was born. Then, in 1968, his son Charlie Chaplin, Jr., died at age 42 of a blood clot in the lungs. His father was living out of the country at the time of his death and did not attend the funeral. Chaplin had a total of 11 children born from his four marriages.
Paul Newman’s son, Scott, died of a drug overdose on Nov. 20, 1978, when he was 28. He had been taking painkillers after being in a motorcycle accident. His mother was the actress Jackie Witte.
Marie Osmond’s son, Michael, committed suicide on Feb. 26, 2010, by jumping out an eighth floor window. Osmond adopted Michael with her husband, Brian Biosil.
Keanu Reeves’s girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, gave birth to a stillborn daughter, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves, in 1999. Syme died in a car accident 18 months later.
Mary Tyler Moore’s only son, Richard Meeker, Jr., died at age 24 of an accidental gunshot wound on Oct. 14, 1980. The gun he was handling was later taken off the market for having a “hair trigger.”  His father was Moore’s first husband, Richard Meeker, Sr.
Jerry Lewis’s youngest son, Joseph, died in 2009 of a narcotics overdose.
Marlon Brando’s daughter, Cheyenne Brando, hanged herself in 1995 when she was 25. Marlon Brando’s son and Cheyenne’s half-brother, Christian, died due to complications with pneumonia in 2008, 4 years after his father’s death.

Actor Rob Delaney lost his two-and-a-half year old son, Henry, in January 2018. He shared the news in a Facebook post a few weeks later. The toddler was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after his first birthday; despite treatment, the disease ultimately claimed Henry’s life.

Bill Cosby and wife Camille Olivia Hanks’s only son, Ennis Cosby, was shot to death on January 16, 1997, when he was 27. At the time, he was changing a tire on the side of the road. Ennis had four sisters, Erika, Erinn, Ensa, and Evin.

In February 2018, Cosby’s daughter Ensa passed at the age of 44. Ensa had reportedly suffered years worth of health problems, including issues with her kidneys, at the time of her death.

Carol Burnett’s daughter, Carrie, died from lung and brain cancer on Jan. 20, 2002, when she was 38. Her father was Joe Hamilton, who was married to Burnett from 1963-1984.
Prince’s son with backup singer Mayte Garcia, Boy Gregory, was born with Pfeiffer Syndrome. He died one week after his birth on Oct. 23, 1996.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden lost his baby daughter, Naomi, in 1972 when she was one year old. His wife Neilia had been driving with the couple’s three children when it was hit by a tractor trailer. Though their sons, Beau and Hunter, survived with minor injuries, both Naomi and Neilia were killed in the accident.
Dr. Dre’s son, Andre Young, Jr., died on Aug. 23, 2008, at the age of 20. He died of a drug overdose in the home of his mother Jenita Porter’s home.
Mia Farrow has lost two children. Her adopted daughter, Tam Farrow, died in 2000 at the age of 19 due to heart failure. Farrow’s daughter Lark, whom she had with husband Andre Previn, died on Dec. 25, 2008.
Loretta Lynn has lost two of her six . Her son, Jack Benny, died on July 22, 1984, when he was 34 years old while trying to ford the Duck River. Lynn’s daughter, Sue, died at age 64 from emphysema on July 29, 2013.

In 1943, Lou Costello’s infant son, Lou, died by drowning in the family pool. His mother was Costello’s wife Anne, Battler.

Vince Neil and Sharise Ruddell’s daughter, Skylar, died of cancer on Aug. 15, 1995, when she was just 4 years old. Neil formed the Skylar Neil Memorial Fund in her honor.

O.J. Simpson’s daughter, Aaren, died in August of 1979, just before her second birthday. She was found drowned in the family swimming pool. Her mother was Simpson’s first wife, Marguerite L. Whitley.

In 1962, Roald Dahl’s daughter, Olivia, died of measles at age seven. Following her death, he became a passionate advocate for vaccinations.

Diane Ladd’s daughter, Diane, whom she had with Bruce Dern, died when she was just 18 months old. She incurred severe head injuries after falling into the family pool.
Roy Orbison’s two oldest sons, Roy and Anthony, died in a house fire in 1968.  Orbison was on tour at the time of the fire.

Roy Rogers’s daughter, Robin Elizabeth, died shortly before her second birthday. She had been born with Down Syndrome in 1950, and she died from complications with mumps. Robin was his only biological daughter with Rogers’s second wife, Dale Evans.

Olympic gold medal alpine skier Bode Miller’s 19-month-old daughter with wife Morgan Beck, Emeline, drowned in June 2018 after falling in a swimming pool. Just four months later, their third child together, a brother was born in October.

Broadway sensation Ruthie Ann Miles lost her four year old daughter on March 5, 2018 in a horrific car crash in Brooklyn. The driver ran a red light, striking five pedestrians and killing another a child.

“99 Luftballoons” singer Nena lost her first son, Christopher, in 1989 when he was 11 months old. He had been born disabled due to medical mistakes made during his birth.
